What is Container Stuffing and Unstuffing in Logistics?

The Definitions of Container Stuffing and Unstaffing

Container stuffing and unstaffing refer to the loading and unloading of cargo into and out of a shipping container.

Container stuffing is the process of loading and packing of cargo into a shipping container. This is typically done at a warehouse or at the port, before the container is sealed and transported.

Container unstuffing – which is also known as ‘container stripping’ or ‘container de-stuffing’ – is the process of unloading and unpacking the cargo from a shipping container at its destination. This could be at a destination port or at a consignee’s warehouse.

The Process of Stuffing a Shipping Container

Container stuffing is an integral part of the logistics industry. While it may seem like an easy task of loading a container until it’s full, stuffing a container actually requires methodical planning for efficient and optimised space utilisation and to ensure that the cargo is properly secured and protected during transportation.

Common container sizes are 20-footers and 40-footers and based on the type and size of cargo that needs to be loaded, logistics teams would need to strategically plan how to arrange their cargo to make sure it fits in these containers while balancing load distribution.

The type of cargo and the way that it’s packaged also influences the method of how the container is stuffed. For instance, in terms of packaging, palletised and un-palletised cargo will be stored and packed in the shipping container differently. As for the type of the cargo, fragile or hazardous cargo will need to be handled and packed with more care and protection to prevent damage from occurring during the transportation process. It is also important to ensure that the way the cargo is stuffed into a container is in accordance with international shipping regulations.

With all these factors to consider, it is important to have a skilled logistics team with the expertise to oversee this process. At Halcon Primo Logistics, our warehouse team brings extensive experience in handling a wide range of cargo – from palletised cargo and bagged cargo to heavy machinery, automotives and out-of-gauge cargo, our team is able to provide tailored solutions that suit the needs of your cargo.

When providing stuffing solutions at our bonded or non-bonded warehouses, our team will first inspect the overall condition of the shipping container – ensuring that it is clean and structurally sound.

Before our warehouse team starts loading the container, we will prepare the proper documentation and labels for the cargo and pack the cargo according to our client’s requirements. Palletised cargo is recommended as it is easier and faster to load and unload.

As a rule of thumb, heavier cargo is loaded first. The heavier cargo is placed at the bottom to create a more stable base and distribute the weight evenly across the container floor. This is important to prevent the tipping of the container during the transportation journey. To further secure the cargo during shipment, dunnage bags (airbags), wooden dunnage, lashing systems, or corner protectors are used.

Once the container stuffing has been completed, our warehouse team will check that all the cargo is loaded and properly secured before sealing it with a security seal for security and customs purposes. Our team will attach all the necessary paperwork to the container and prepare for it to be transported out of our warehouse.

The Process of Unstuffing a Shipping Container

Similar to container stuffing, when unstuffing a container, it is important to have a skilled logistics team. There are often tight deadlines to meet and instead of cutting corners and risking the safety of the cargo and warehouse team, having an experienced and efficient team would not only ensure better handling of cargo, but also reduce delays and possible additional costs.

At Halcon Primo Logistics, our well-trained team performs systematic and careful unstuffing operations to meet delivery deadlines without compromising safety or accuracy.

Once the shipping container has arrived at our bonded or non-bonded warehouse, our warehouse receiving team will check the container seal number to confirm that it matches the shipping documents. The warehouse team will also check the container for any sign of damage or tampering before unsealing it.

The container is then opened carefully – as the cargo inside may have moved during its transport journey – and the cargo will start to be unfastened. Our forklift operators will carefully and systematically unload the cargo from the container and place it in our sheltered warehouse under temporary storage for verification and sorting. Once all inspection has been completed, our team will then prepare the cargo for distribution, staging or for longer term storage in our warehouse.

Lastly, the shipping container is cleaned and inspected before it is returned for the next use.
